Russia’s MiG-35 fighter to win billion-dollar contract and leave US rivals behind

Russia is prepared to fight for the highly lucrative arms market of India. Delhi will assign $35 billion for the five-year program to completely rearm the national armed forces. A third of this amount falls for aviation. About $10.4 billion is to be spent on purchasing 126 up-to-date fighter jets. Several other billion dollars will be used to acquire 197 light helicopters.

Moscow hosted the Interpolitech-2008 international arms exhibition featuring the most advanced Russian and foreign-made military and specialized equipment for police and secret services.
Equipment purchases for national security agencies and secret services were also announced.
UAZ Patriot scout vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles for the Russian Federal Security Service’s border troops and state-of-the-art liquid-crystal displays from Belarus and many other systems were displayed.

A US court has convicted a Syrian-born arms dealer for plotting to sell arms, including anti-aircraft rockets, to Colombian rebels.
Monzer al-Kassar was found guilty for conspiracy to murder US officers, to export anti-aircraft weapons, to support Colombia’s Farc rebels, and for money laundering by the New York court on Thursday.
“[This] puts an end to his ability to command a global munitions empire that armed and funded terrorist organisations for decades,” Michele Leonhart, the acting administrator for the US Drug Enforcement Agency, said.

Russia has sold 12 MiG-29 fighter jets to Sudan, the Sudanese defense minister, Abdel Rahim Mohammed Hussein, said during a visit to Moscow on Friday, according to Russian news agencies.

Iran plans to use An-140 planes to patrol borders

KISH ISLAND (Iran), (RIA Novosti) – Iran will need an additional 20 An-140 turboprop aircraft to ensure effective patrols of its national borders, Iran’s aircraft industry official said on Wednesday.
The Iranian HESA company has so far produced five An-140 passenger planes at a facility in Esfahan under license (as IRAN-140) and eight other aircraft are being assembled by Iranian specialists trained in Russia and Ukraine.

Gaddafi in Russia for arms talks

Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has arrived in Russia for three days of talks expected to concentrate on boosting energy ties and arms trade.
It is Col Gaddafi’s first visit since Soviet times, and follows Vladimir Putin’s trip to Libya in April.
The two countries signed several big contracts at the time.

Turkey interested in Israeli UAVs

Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul is in Israel for a two-day visit, the focus of which is to examine a batch of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that Turkey is slated to acquire, Turkish officials said.
According to Turkish media reports, last year Turkey began operating the medium-altitude Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elbit-made Heron UAVs over northern Iraq, home to scores of Kurdish rebel bases.
