Canadian journalist freed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) — A Canadian Broadcasting Corp. correspondent who had been held in Afghanistan for four weeks has been released, the CBC said Saturday.
Mellissa Fung “is now safe and in reasonable health,” Hubert T. Lacroix, CBC/Radio Canada’s president and chief executive officer, said in Toronto.

LAGOS (AFP) – Southern Nigeria’s main armed group MEND said Wednesday it had freed a Lebanese hostage from his kidnappers two days after his abduction.
“A commando unit from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) today, Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at about 1700 Hrs conducted a successful rescue of Mr Melad Nasari as promised, from deep inside the bush where he was confined by his abductors,” said a MEND statement.

An Israeli businessman kidnapped in Ghana almost a week ago has escaped unharmed from his captors.
There are reports he was freed by Ghanaian security forces with the help of Israeli police.
Other reports say he simply slipped away from his captors in a taxi and then called the police.
The Jerusalem Post named the man as Dror Weinstein, a businessman in his 60s. His kidnappers had demanded $500,000 (£300,000) for his release.

Two Austrian hostages held for months by Islamic militants in the Sahara desert have been freed, officials in Mali and Austria say.
The two, Andrea Kloiber, 43, and Wolfgang Ebner, 51, disappeared in February while on holiday in Tunisia.
The North African branch of al-Qaeda said it had seized them.
