Indian Commandos Storm Jewish Center

MUMBAI, India — Indian commandos slid down ropes from a hovering army helicopter Friday morning as security forces stormed a Jewish center that had been seized by terrorists during a coordinated series of attacks on Mumbai, India’s commercial and entertainment capital.
The blue-uniformed commandos landed on the roof and soon made their way inside Nariman House, home to the Orthodox Jewish group Chabad-Lubavitch. A gunbattle then broke out inside the building, with hundreds of shots being fired over the next four hours.

Six foreigners among 101 dead in Mumbai

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – At least 101 people have been killed in attacks by gunmen in Mumbai, police said on Thursday.
“At least six foreigners have been killed and the death figure has gone up to 101 now,” Ramesh Tayde, a senior police officer told Reuters from Mumbai’s control room.

World leaders condemn horrific attacks in Mumbai

(CNN) — The following is reaction by world leaders to the attacks in Mumbai, India.
Spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
“The secretary-general condemns the rash of shootings and blasts in Mumbai today, which killed and wounded a large number of people. Such violence is totally unacceptable. The secretary-general reiterates his conviction that no cause or grievance can justify indiscriminate attacks against civilians. He calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice swiftly.

Mumbai toll climbs as hotel standoffs continue

MUMBAI, India (CNN) — The morning after teams of gunmen carried out a brazen series of attacks across southern Mumbai — killing scores of people and taking hostages in multiple locations — the situation remained chaotic.
The death toll from the series of coordinated attacks was at 101 by midday Thursday authorities said. The number of people wounded in the attacks have also been raised to 314, said Pradeep Indulkar, deputy secretary for Maharashtra, the state where Mumbai is located.

Indian navy ‘sank Thai trawler’

The owner of a Thai fishing trawler has said the Indian navy sank it off Somalia’s coast last week after wrongly assuming it was a pirate “mother ship”.
Wicharn Sirichaiekawat said the Indian frigate had attacked the Ekawat Nava 5 while it was being hijacked by pirates.
He said one of the crew had been found alive after six days in the Gulf of Aden, but that another 14 were missing.
The Indian navy has insisted the vessel fired in self-defence at a pirate ship which had been stacked with explosives.

The Indian navy has said that one of its warships in the Gulf of Aden has destroyed a ship belonging to pirates operating off the coast of Somalia.
The INS Tabar opened fire on a pirate “mother ship” after it came under attack, a government statement said.
There has been a surge in piracy incidents off Somalia.
The Saudi-owned Sirius Star supertanker is currently anchored off the Somali coast after the vessel and its 25 crew were seized by pirates.

Serial bombs kill at least 68 in Assam

GUWAHATI, India (Reuters) – Eleven bomb blasts in quick succession ripped through Guwahati and three other towns in Assam, killing at least 68 people and wounding 335, police said.
No one has so far claimed responsibility for the bomb blasts, which security analysts said appeared to be coordinated.
Assam has been a focus of a separatist insurgency for decades, but it has also recently suffered bomb attacks blamed on Islamist militants from neighbouring Bangladesh.
