TAIPEI (AFP) — Taiwan pro-independence activists early Thursday scuffled with police outside a hotel in Taipei where visiting Chinese envoy Chen Yunlin was enjoying a banquet in his honour, trapping him inside.
About 2,000 protesters venting their anger at Chen’s visit to the island had gathered outside the hotel since late Wednesday as the banquet was being held, with about the same number of police attempting to restore order.

Kidnappers kill Chinese hostages in Sudan

KHARTOUM (Reuters) – Kidnappers killed five Chinese oil workers on Monday out of nine they had been holding hostage in central Sudan for more than a week, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry blamed the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), a Darfur rebel group, for seizing and killing the Chinese. A London-based JEM official denied the group was involved.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) – Pakistan said Saturday that China will help it build two more nuclear power plants, offsetting Pakistani frustration over a recent nuclear deal between archrival India and the United States.
The agreement with China was among 12 accords signed during Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent visit to Beijing, said Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
