Gaddafi in Russia for arms talks

Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has arrived in Russia for three days of talks expected to concentrate on boosting energy ties and arms trade.
It is Col Gaddafi’s first visit since Soviet times, and follows Vladimir Putin’s trip to Libya in April.
The two countries signed several big contracts at the time.

Soldier to run restive Ingushetia

A career soldier has been appointed to run Russia’s unstable southern republic of Ingushetia, where attacks on security forces have escalated.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev named Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, a paratrooper, as acting president, to replace Murat Zyazikov, a former KGB officer.

An explosion has destroyed a key bridge linking Georgia’s breakaway republic of Abkhazia with the rest of the country.
Georgian officials and Abkhazian authorities blamed each other for the blast. Residents of Abkhazia’s Gali district had used the bridge to reach Georgia’s Zugdidi region. Georgian authorities have called the explosion an effort by separatist and Russian officials to cut off Abkhazia and another breakaway Georgian region, South Ossetia, from the rest of the country.
