Summit call to end Gaza onslaught
MUSCAT: GCC leaders yesterday agreed on the need to hold an urgent Arab summit on the Palestinian issue and take necessary action to stop the ongoing Zionist atrocities in Gaza.
The summit is expected to be held on Friday in Doha at the request of the Amir of Qatar Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Speaking at a Press conference following the summit of GCC leaders, Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah said the leaders were concerned about the situation in Gaza and reiterated their joint stance in condemning the atrocities by the Israeli war machine against the innocent Palestinians.
He also indicated that the leaders gave their directives to contact the UN Security Council’s permanent members to address the issue and work on protecting the Palestinian people and ending the siege.
A statement later also urged conflicting Palestinian factions “to reconcile in these difficult times”.
The post-meeting statement made no reference to the proposal for the emergency Arab summit.
“Currently there are ongoing calls between the heads of state, to ensure the agenda of the emergency summit will result in a united Arab position that helps the Palestinian people,” the Omani minister said.
Oman has already told the Arab League it would join an emergency summit.
